Giving Thanks

Turkeys are in.  Those large inflatable decorations in people’s front yards have silly grins as though they too, are thankful!  Grocery stores advertise gluttony.  Parades divert attention to the upcoming holiday season where we legitimize debt-based spending.  Giving thanks—and to whom we give it—is lost.

As you sit around the table with friends and family in this season, can I give you one recipe that might be missing from your table?  It is a recipe for humility which is necessary to truly being thankful.  (Otherwise, we deem the gifts to be an entitlement.)  It goes like this:

Dad sets the pace at the meal by filling the glasses.  He does it because he wants to show love for his wife who serves the family all the time.  The children set the table.  They do it because they want to show honor to their parents who provide for their needs.  The mom brings food to the table in appropriate pride at the labor of her hands.  She presents these gifts because she loves her family.  The eating is not food oriented.  After appropriate remarks about the savor of the food, the conversation turns to all the blessings that have been garnered into the family’s storehouse.  The guests are honored by asking them of the blessings they’ve received.  Somewhere, there is a formal time of stating  individual thanks for God’s gifts by each member present.  Reading from Eph. 1:3-10 noting the words “every blessing,” “lavished,” and “riches” is part of the day.   A simple hymn of thanks sung afterwards would be appropriate as well.  God is abundant in His giving of gifts!  Truly, we should be thankful.

Information Corner

Please pick up your children by 2:30 p.m.   If in rare instances you cannot do that, you must call the school office to schedule who will be watching your children. Office and administrative staff cannot be a babysitting service.

● Please remember to stop your car along Locust Street  or in the parking spaces but not in the driveway when dropping off children.  This keeps the flow of traffic moving before and after school.  THANKS
