2007Text Box: Interpreting the World
Julie is reading to me a book entitled, Lost in the Middle by Paul Tripp. It is aimed at those who are in the middle of life and find that something has happened for which most of us are unprepared - getting older. As he unpacks this, the author talks a lot about our interpretations of our circumstances and how we need to have a thoroughly Christian grid to interpret what happens to us. In light of that I’d like to ask some questions that are aimed at the raising of a generation of children and young people that are better equipped at their application of Christian truth than you and me.
First, a large question: What influences are you allowing into the minds of your children that go unchecked? Here I am thinking of music, videos, television, radio, newspapers, magazines, etc. I am NOT saying that we should allow none of those things into our homes. What I am asking is, “Are these things allowed in without an active Christian interpretation by you?”
Secondly: How do you respond to life’s circumstances? Do you find yourself blaming others for your problems? Do you make excuses for yourself? Do you give reasons that are not founded on Biblical truth for what is happening to you personally. (Children do “catch” this interpretation from adults.) The gospel does provide hope for all circumstances that come to us as we trust a sovereign God for all the mundane activities of life.
Thirdly: Are you proactively engaged in telling your child Scriptural truth? Rooting out falsehood is only half of the story. We need to be filling our children and young people with the Word of God that is able to meet their needs long after our influence is done. This not only means taking them to church, but also reading the Bible to them daily, discussing it, and using it for a manual on how to live. (Read II Peter 1:3,4)
How we interpret life depends on being saturated with ourselves - or with truth. One will produce self-satisfied pleasure seekers. The other will encourage a daily walk by faith.
