Weekly ReminderMarch 12, 2007Text Box: The Nature of Education: Hard Work
Students have a funny idea about education. They come to school in Kindergarten and first grade and think that school is fun (Of course, it is!) and are willing to tolerate the bit of “hard work” that is involved in learning to hold the pencil correctly and write neatly. As students grow, so does their distaste for doing anything “too difficult.” Eventually, by the time students are in fourth grade and up, some begin to say that “school isn’t fun.” What they mean is that there are portions of it that they don’t like. They have to work toward a standard that is beyond what seems reasonable. It requires them to work.
Consequently, there are very few high school students that are willing to invest whatever it takes to get the job done. They put in time; they study a bit; they do some homework (easy stuff first); or they decide that other legitimate things kept them from doing their homework (“I had to take a shower!”)
As a result, young people have a very difficult time making the transition to college where the opportunities to pursue many different things increases! Academic work suffers. Students end up doing poorly and lose the opportunities that are afforded by college work.
The problem in a nutshell seems to be that children are learning that “fun” is the key. How they “feel” about their work is the most important thing. If it does not provide the appropriate stimulation, or is not something that they like, then it is not important to them. The “do-it-whatever-it-takes” attitude is missing.
The answer, as usual, is in the Scriptures. Proverbs 14:23 tells that, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Those who are trained by doing hard work, even when it does not please them, are learning invaluable lessons about life. Using the Word of God to train and instruct our children will show them the truth about the world in which we live.
