Educational therapy developed by the National Institute of Learning Development is a comprehensive program of neurological training to improve perceptual and cognitive skills. Children with average to above average intelligence who struggle with learning because of perceptual and cognitive weaknesses meet with a certified educational therapist for two eighty-minute sessions each week. Since modification of the regular academic program may be necessary to accommodate student needs and therapy scheduling, the entire teaching team for a particular student becomes actively involved.
Comprehensive testing is necessary to determine if the NILD program can benefit a particular student. This may be scheduled upon enrollment or at the recommendation of parents or teachers throughout the school year. Testing is done through professional services at the parents' expense or through the school district services. If the evaluation indicates a need for special training , parents may participate in the NILD program.
